THE FACE BEHIND THE ART

Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be writing a page about myself. And what’s more, I never would have thought that anybody would even be interested in reading about me. But if I have learned anything in the past ten years, it’s that nothing is off limits when it comes to art. Absolutely nothing.

In 2015, when I opened my atelier in Piran and showed you my work, you responded in the most incredible way, supporting the dream of a young artist trying to leave her mark in this world. I’m now at the point where I can proudly call myself a professional artist, something I was always dreaming about as a kid.

GROWING UP IN PIRAN

WHO IS NIKA?

NIKA STEGEL

Since my work is being recognized by more and more people, it feels appropriate I introduce myself a bit more. My name is Nika, and I’m a graduate in interior design with a passion for color and art in general. I’ve always been impressed by creative people and wanted to become one myself. I was born in 1992, but the story you are most interested in started roughly 23 years later.

When I passed my last exam at the Faculty of Design and took a year off before finishing my degree, I had a lot of free time on my hands. I just picked up a piece of driftwood on a beach near Piran and made a few houses out of it. They looked kind of cute but still needed a lot of work.

THE YEAR 2015

As I was spending more and more time in the atelier, people started stopping by to watch me work. At first, it wasn’t even a part-time job – more of a hobby, really. Most of the year, I did some freelance graphic design work and traveled, but when summer started, it was all about Nika’s tiny house.

My crafting skills improved, and so did my touch for color and precise painting. It took me roughly 2 years before I figured out how to do certain things, to realize the full potential of Nika’s Tiny House, and to start running it as a business.

PIRAN IS HOME

If you have already had the pleasure of visiting Piran, you can imagine how fun it was for me growing up here—walking through these colorful streets and watching people from all over the world come and admire its beauty.

Throughout the centuries, Piran has inspired many artists, and I proudly admit I’m one of them. Even though I’ve lived here my whole life, I still haven’t seen everything Piran has to offer. Every day, I notice new things about this city that I have never seen before, and every day I am more amazed at Piran’s ability to remain timeless, beautiful, and an inspiration for many generations of artists.

REACHING FOR THE STARS

Truly the most unbelievable aspect of my artistic career so far have been the responses I got from you, my dear fans. Never in my life could I have imagined that people would be coming to Piran solely to visit me and check out my atelier, asking me to take photos with you or waiting for months (and in few cases even years) to be able to buy one of my pieces.

The balance I have to keep, between having the shelves of the atelier filled for summer visitors, shipping out orders I receive from social media and at the same time feeding my artistic soul by creating new things, is something I occasionally still struggle with.  But to even be in this position, I consider it one of my life’s greatest achievements, and despite choosing the world “struggle” earlier, I still wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Sure, it has not always been easy, but you make it worth it a thousand times over. I’m beyond proud my work has been so influential to all of you and can’t wait to see where this artistic journey will take us next.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Nika
